In partnership with the Gerald A Doering Foundation, Savaggi presents the Grand Opening of Newburgh’s newest space for arts & culture:
Savaggi Gallery at the Bank Art Space (fka Karpeles Manuscript Museum)
The Bank Art Space is housed in the historic Newburgh Savings Bank building at the famed intersection of Broadway and Liberty Street, opening its doors on September 2023 with a soft opening and a grand opening in January 2024.
The historic building was purchased by the Gerald A Doering Foundation in 2021. After the passing of David Karpeles in 2022, Mr. Doering decided the building would honor the Karpeles' legacy and house innovative creativity to be shared with the Newburgh community.
Mr. Doering enlisted the help of a newly established Newburgh arts instigator, Savaggi Arts, founded by public artist and monumental sculptor Rosanna Scimeca to provide creative direction and develop programming. Savaggi Arts is an arts incubator working with local landowners to transform unused urban space into beautiful, engaging art spaces that reflect and serve the local community. The organization has plans to revitalize and create a related arts center with working art studios in Newburgh’s former Park Theater at 315 Broadway, where renovations are set to begin shortly.
As a gallery and exhibition space, The Bank will combine the traditional aesthetic inherent in its mid-19th century architecture (high arched and muraled ceilings, and marble walls and floors, for instance) with both traditional and starkly contemporary and experimental art works. The Bank’s high ceilings give way to monumental sculptures and interactive exhibits, while the building’s vaults and tunnels beckon interactive theater and immersive installations incorporating light and sound.
The collaborative mission of the Bank Art Center and Savaggi is to bring more cultural institutions to Newburgh, a city steeped in creativity. The space will showcase a diversity of artists, from regional to international, with a focus on larger scale installations and public art.
For The Bank’s inaugural exhibition is September 2023, Savaggi Gallery invited Laurie De Chiara of De Chiara Projects to serve as the guest-curator. On January 27, 2024 Savaggi Gallery will present its grand opening with the works of renowned Burning Man artist, Kate Raudenbush with the show titled Inner Landscapes.
